Packing a padel racket for the Riviera Maya is one of the better decisions you can make. The region has quietly built a serious padel scene – and unlike the hotel tennis court, the local clubs are full of players happy to complete a four. Here's how to find and book a court in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, even if your Spanish stops at "hola".
Where to Play
Smash lists around 50 clubs in Cancún and another 25 in Playa del Carmen, ranging from open-air courts a few blocks from the beach to air-conditioned indoor centres (worth knowing about in August).
- Padel clubs in Cancún – most courts sit in the city rather than the Hotel Zone, a short taxi ride away
- Padel clubs in Playa del Carmen – compact scene, many courts within cycling distance of the centre
- Further down the coast, Tulum and Mérida have growing scenes too
What It Costs
Courts are rented per court, per hour, in Mexican pesos – split between four players it's very affordable by European or US standards. Evening slots (19:00–22:00) are peak: that's when locals play, after the heat breaks. Daytime slots are easy to get but bring water and pick a shaded or indoor court.
Live prices show in the Smash app before you pay, so there's no haggling at the desk and no surprise "tourist rate".
Tips for Visiting Players
- Book evenings a couple of days ahead. Locals fill the post-sunset slots fast.
- Need a fourth? Many clubs run open mix-in sessions – ask when you book, or check the club's events in the app.
- Rent gear on site. Most commercial clubs rent rackets, so you don't have to fly with one.
- Hydrate seriously. Even evening games in Quintana Roo are sweaty business.
